Early intervention and family support

Community Saftey Partners work together in an effort to address Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) that affects individuals and communities; and prevent the offending young people and families from entering the criminal justice system.
As a result of any report received about ASB by a young person, a letter is sent to their parents or carers to ensure that they are aware of the activity; and to offer any relevant support that the parents or guardians may need (to help improve the youngster's behaviour). In some cases this letter is enough to cease the behaviour or activity.
If a repeat offence occurs, a second letter is sent in addition to personal contact by the Community Safety Unit's, Joint Family Manager (JFM).
Depending on the incident, the JFM will liaise with Neighbourhood Policing teams, social landlords (such as AmicusHorizon and MOAT), the school, Social Services and then visit the home to meet the individual and family - to ascertain the next most appropriate step.
This next step may be:
- A referral to a Partnership or outside agency (such as Social Services or school).
- An offer of additional support to the individual or parents (including anger management, counselling or CASA support).
- An offer to attend an 'Inmate Peer Group' session - youngsters can hear what it is really like in Lock-up.
- An Accetable Behaviour Agreement being issued.
