Sheerness flooded with SmartWater

You Said We Did iconThe Community Safety Partnership’s crime prevention activities will hit new levels this weekend as its SmartWater initiative revisits Sheerness – supplying even more residents with FREE SmartWater kits.

This high-tech and highly effective crime reduction tool, is used to mark household valuables.  Each bottle of the invisible liquid has a unique forensic code, similar to DNA, which means that marked property is 100% linked to the owner’s address.

SmartWater signs are erected in treated areas to warn potential offenders, which act as a highly visible deterrent to burglars.  If your property does get stolen, once recovered, the SmartWater helps the police identify the owner and return it to them.

All potential offenders and recovered property are routinely scanned for SmartWater, as well as similar forensic marking products, at Swale’s police stations.  It has a 100% conviction rate and so is proving to be an invaluable tool in Swale’s battle against crime.

The Community Safety Partnership SmartWatering team will bring together the Sheppey Neighbourhood Policing Team; Swale Borough Council Street Wardens; Kent County Council Community Wardens and staff from AmicusHorizon Housing Association – this Saturday, 17th April and will see the team attempt to cover the largest area to date, inviting over 500 households across Sheerness to take advantage of these FREE kits.

Adrian Fromm, Crime Reduction Officer for the Swale Community Safety Unit, said: “SmartWater is proving itself to be a highly effective crime prevention tool. We have seen a 93% reduction in burglary in our pilot SmartWatered areas already. So, I urge those residents already contacted, to take up this offer – hopefully being on a Saturday it will make it even easier for them to take advantage of it.”

“As this is such an effective deterrent to burglars, signs warning that property in the area has been marked are erected to further protect home-owners from offenders.”

“Step by step we are attempting to flood Swale with SmartWater, making its households less and less attractive to burglars.”

More SmartWater events are planned across Swale in the coming months.  For more information, contact the Community Safety Unit on 01795 417193 or email csu@swale.gov.uk
